Unfortunately, my last race wasn’t my best performance, but it certainly was a significant learning experience. Things started off a bit rough even before the race, with some fumbles right from the beginning, including setting up my tent.

During the race itself, my body felt surprisingly good, but my mind became increasingly agitated. I found myself battling the weather, stressing about how to manage my rest periods, and constantly worrying about my pace. As I headed out for the final lap, cheese sandwich in hand, something just clicked and told me to stop.

At that exact moment, I spotted a fellow runner, Dave, hunched over a tree and vomiting. I was actually glad I had decided to stop, as it meant I could walk the remaining four miles with Dave and ensure he made it back safely. There were a few worrying moments where it seemed he might need first aid, but we got there in the end.

When I went to ring the bell to officially DNF (Did Not Finish), I realised I had taken my ankle timer off during a frantic kit change. Even if I had wanted to continue, I would have been disqualified anyway!

The day after the race, I felt quite deflated and a bit sorry for myself. However, I’m taking the positives from this experience and channelling them into my training. I’ll be back out there trying again soon.

On a brighter note, it was a pleasure to run with Jan. It was truly inspiring to watch him double down, focus, and grind out those miles. He’s a true ultra legend!
